“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien
Katie grew up in California and attended UCLA, where she studied English and graduated magna cum laude. While at UCLA, she taught an undergraduate seminar and discovered her love for teaching. After graduating, she worked for Devon Review, Tier One, Edvanced, and Varsity before making her way down to San Diego and joining the team at Hammer Prep. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Literature with a specialization in critical gender studies at UCSD (we’re impressed too) and teaches a variety of humanities courses ranging from literature to history to philosophy. When she’s not receiving academic distinctions or publishing papers, Katie enjoys hiking, reading sad Victorian novels, working on jigsaw puzzles, and hanging out with her kittens (aptly named Merry and Pippin). Katie’s other favorite activity is having Danny DeVito help pick out her prom dress (if you’ve never seen Twins, stop what you’re doing right now and go watch that movie)!
